Ornamental chain anklet tattoo

Dotwork · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo wraps around the ankle like a jewelled anklet, with a central floral motif and chains of beads and teardrop pendants hanging down towards the top of the foot. It uses fine black lines with stippled dots, and the shading is solid black with no colour. The bare foot fills most of the frame against a white sheet, with the design sharp and centred on the ankle.

The chapel roof came down in the February gales, and by March the sheep had claimed the only dry corner of the nave. I was sent up from the village with a sieve and a bucket because Mr Ashcombe wanted every scrap of altar silver catalogued before the surveyors arrived. It was me who found the chain under a fallen slate, wrapped round a fist-sized stone as though someone had tied it there for safe keeping.

It was no thicker than a bootlace and black with tarnish. Openwork lotus petals ran along the top, and from them hung strings of beads and small teardrop drops, each bead worn smooth. I rubbed one with my thumb and the grime came away in a grey ribbon. The parish book said the last lady of the house had sent to Bath for a set of these, and that she had worn them to the Michaelmas dance before the family lost the estate to debt.

Tom from the surveyor's office wanted it weighed and tagged with the rest. He said nobody would miss a broken trinket in a ruin. I told him I would carry it down myself, and I did, my pockets heavy with rust and ten years of my own small thefts I had never confessed.

I hung it on the nail above my cottage door, where the draught could reach it. Each time the door opens the drops swing and tick against the wood, patient as someone still counting the steps down from the old stair.
