Compass rose tattoo in sepia
Geometric · Black and grey · Photo
A compass rose with an eight-point star sits inside concentric rings, with the cardinal points labelled N, E, S and W. The design is rendered in fine, slightly soft linework with light shading inside the points. The sepia tone of the photograph gives the piece a monochrome, aged look, centred in the frame.

You learn the market at Harrowgate Wharf by its smells before its stalls: wet tarpaulin, frying onions, the sour tang of brine from the fish sheds. The rain has been falling since dawn and nobody minds, because rain keeps the buyers under the awnings and the traders talking. Old Pell Adair sells maps from a trestle table at the far end, weighted down with brass dividers and a jar of cold tea. He says he will sell you the way out of town if you have the coins, and he is not joking.

You come back on the third wet Saturday with a folded chart that doesn't match the river. Pell takes it, holds it to the lamp, and runs a thumbnail along the lines the way a surgeon checks a seam. Every north on it has been drawn a little off, as though someone wanted the city pointing somewhere else. He pulls a loupe from his waistcoat and laughs without any warmth. Eight points, he says, and only four of them are honest. The letters are the ones that lie.
He slides a blank sheet across and tells you to draw the rose from memory, rings outside, star inside, N at the top where the rain can't reach. Your hand shakes at the E. When you finish, the rain has stopped, and in the grey light the ink lines look soft at the edges, as if they are still deciding where they belong. Pell rolls the paper, ties it with string, and presses it into your palm. Walk north, he says. The market will let you go once you stop asking which north.
