Ornate compass rose design
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a compass rose with an eight-pointed star at the centre, surrounded by a circular band of scalloped and dotted ornament. The letters N, E, S and W mark the cardinal points around the outer edge. Fine hatched shading and stippling give the star depth, and the warm brown and grey tones on a parchment-like background create a vintage feel.

You unroll the route map on the tailboard of the last wagon and weight its corners with a tin of greasepaint and a horseshoe, because the wind off the moor has been trying to take it since Thursday. The compass rose in the top corner has faded to the colour of weak tea. Someone long ago inked the eight points with a steady hand and dotted the scalloped border so the north would be easy to find. That job used to be your father's. You took the pen when his hands started to shake.

The show has eleven people left. The big top has a tear the size of a cart, mended with canvas patches that do not match. Every town on the route used to fill its field with tents on a Tuesday. Now the bookings are a village fete, a car park outside Carlisle, and a rugby club that wants a bouncy castle instead of elephants. You circle each one with a pencil, then hesitate over the blank stretch of paper where the coast should be.
Pip, who trained the ponies before she could read, comes round the wagon with two mugs of tea and asks where you are taking them. You put your finger on the star at the centre, where all the lines meet. "Wherever the needle points," you say, and she laughs, because she has heard your father say exactly that a hundred times.
You fold the map along its old creases so the compass rose ends up on the outside, facing the wind. Tomorrow the ponies will pull the wagons west toward the sea, because the star says west and nobody has a better idea. You tuck the pencil behind your ear and go to wake the horses.
