Hold the lantern lower, boy, or the wind takes the flame and you learn the pass in the dark, which nobody recommends. There. Now mind the stone under your boots. The surveyor who nailed that brass compass rose to the hut wall used to say north is the only point that never argues, and I believed him until the winter of the white dog.

He came up from the lowland towns with a case of instruments and a fleur-de-lis stamped on his papers, because he was proud of his grandmother's Lyon, and he drew every ridge in brown ink so fine you could hardly see it. Eight points, he said, because eight is how many ways a lost man can turn and still be right. He charged the village nothing for the map. He only asked for a bed by the stove and a bird on the sill, a black swift that followed him up the track every morning.

When the snow came early that year, the swift flew out ahead of him one dawn, wheeling north-west toward the saddle, and he laughed and followed it. Nobody saw him again. But the swift came back to the hut every evening after, and it always perched at the upper left of the wall, under the rose, where its shadow lay across the N and the W at once.

So when you're lost, and you will be, look for the bird before you look for the star. Birds don't draw maps. They just know where the wind is going.
