Pocket watch and peony on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A pocket watch with Roman numerals, a beaded chain and small gears sits in front of a large peony with shaded petals and leaves. The shading is soft and detailed in grey, with red and orange touches on the watch face and the hands. The tattoo fills the upper arm and reaches toward the shoulder, with the watch in the lower left and the flower in the upper right.

The watch has been running slow since the Cape, and Captain Pryce wants to know why before they round the Horn. You lift it from its velvet box in the chart room, the brass case warm from your palm, and open the lid to find the hands sitting at twenty past four as if nobody had ever wound them. Outside, rain comes sideways off the swell and the lamp swings on its hook.

Your father pressed it into your hand on the Liverpool quay and said it had kept time for three generations of men who never once reached the far side of anywhere. You doubted him then and you doubt most things he said. But the enamel face has a hairline crack across the seven, someone has painted a thin red line along the rim of the numerals, and the little gears behind the dial still turn when you tap the glass.
On the third night you find the reason. Tucked beneath the balance wheel, folded small, is a pressed petal, dry and pale as tissue, left by someone who wanted a flower to travel south with them. You hold it up to the lamp. The red on the hands has bled into its edges. You understand then that the watch was never slow. It was waiting for you to stop counting days and start counting the hours left to Valparaíso.
You set it by the ship's bell, press the crown, and feel the escapement catch, quick and certain, like a pulse under your thumb.
