The compass hangs from the centre pole of the Big Top, where your grandfather hung it forty years ago, and every morning you check it before the gates open. It doesn't point north any more. It points down the lane past the hoopla stalls, past the last caravan, toward the salt marsh where the fair stopped the autumn the Saltcombe ferry went down. Your uncle swore it was the damp. You have never believed him.

The bird came in the spring, a yellow wagtail that followed the lorries from town to town and settled on the dodgem roof as if it had paid for a ticket. The anchor came from the wreck, a rusted thing the old showman used as a weight for the sideshow awning. Between them they seem to have decided something about you, though you have never managed to ask what.

On the last night of the season you unpick the canvas, take the brass case down from its hook, and open the map inside. The teal wash has bled into the coastline, so the sea is bigger than it was. Beneath the vines the needle trembles, then swings, and you follow it with a torch across the dew-wet field to the gap in the hedge.

At dawn the field is only flattened grass and the tyre marks of vans. The bird is gone, its perch empty on the roof. You stand at the edge of the marsh with the anchor's chain cold in your hand, and the needle, for the first time, lies still and points back at the fair.
