Circular geometric seal design
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A circular design drawn in brown ink with a double outer ring, containing several overlapping circles, curved panels, diagonal straight lines and small ring and dot details. The linework is uneven and sketched, with no shading, and the design is shown in a single brown ink tone on a pale, mottled background. The composition is centred and symmetrical, with the motif filling most of the square frame.

The box came up from the boat with the tide still in its seams, and nobody in Crane Harbour would touch the seal until Ada Pennock had finished her tea. She sat with it on the scrubbed table and turned it under the lamp. Two rings overlapped on the face, a third circle sat tucked against the rim like a moon that had lost its way, and a straight line ran across the lot as though someone had meant to cut the design in two and lost their nerve.

Her father had taught her that every seal is a question and every lock is a sentence someone wrote in a hurry. She tried the old keys first, then the brass ones from the drawer marked Dead Men. Nothing turned. The three small dots near the bottom gave her pause. She pressed her thumb to them one after another, the way you might count out change, and felt something settle behind the iron like a cat turning over in its sleep.
The lid lifted without a sound. Inside there was no gold and no letters, only a ring of pale stone and a folded slip of paper in a hand she knew from the harbour ledger. It read: Two left, one right, and the sea will hold the rest. Underneath, in smaller writing, someone had added that the box was never meant to be opened by the man who sent it, and that he had known this when he sealed it.
Ada folded the paper along its creases and carried the box to the window. Beyond the breakwater the tide was turning, and she counted the lamps along the quay, three of them, before she pressed the dots again and let the lid fall shut. Then she went to find her coat.
