Dreamcatcher and anchor on a thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A dreamcatcher with a web pattern, three feathers and a cluster of flowers at the top sits above a shaded anchor wrapped in rope. The linework is dark and clean, with grey shading giving the feathers and anchor depth against the skin. The design is centred on a plain skin background within a black and cream frame.

The boats went out before light every morning from the harbour at Scarrow Bay, and every morning Old Tamsin Reid hung a dreamcatcher from the nail above her door, because her husband had brought one home from a trader in Liverpool and she had never found the heart to take it down. The web was woven from grey wool, with a flower caught in the middle, and the feathers hung low enough to brush the sill.

When the Kestrel failed to come back on the first night of the autumn gale, the village women stood on the quay with their shawls pulled tight. Tamsin said nothing. She went home, took the dreamcatcher down, and walked it to the shore, where she tied it to the rusted anchor that lay half buried in the shingle. Her grandson asked her why she would give a good thing to the sea, and she told him the sea only wanted what it was owed, and a web was a poor kind of payment, but it was what she had.
The Kestrel came in on the morning tide, her sail torn to ribbons and her crew grey with salt. The captain said a light had shown on the water all night, a pale weave of lines drawing them home past the reef. Nobody argued with him. Tamsin took the anchor back up the beach that afternoon, untied the wool, and hung the web on her nail again, feathers and all, and she never once asked whether the sea had kept its side of the bargain.
