Geometric line fan band on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a forearm with a geometric tattoo made of fine black lines that radiate and intersect to form overlapping triangles and fan shapes. A solid black band runs around the lower edge of the design, framing it. The shading is built from line density rather than solid fill, and the composition wraps evenly around the arm.

Nobody in Tarrow had asked Ysolde to draw the river, but by the third morning of the flood the ferrymen were waiting at her table with their caps in their hands. She sat them on the cold step, laid a sheet of calfskin across her knees, and dipped her pen. Her father had taught her to rule lines with a bone straight-edge, and she had never used it on anything that could drown.

She began at the sluice stone and drew a line for every road the water might take to the low meadow, fanning them out until the hide was crowded. Where two lines crossed she set a point, and where three points made a shape she shaded it with tighter and tighter strokes, so a reader of the hide would know which ground was soft and which was firm. The ferrymen leaned in. The elder, Marrick Dunn, asked her plainly whether the mill would hold, and she put her finger on the one triangle that no line passed through.
The mill held. The lower meadow went under to the hedge tops, and the sheep were already on the high pasture because Ysolde had told them which path to walk. The elders called it sorcery and wanted the calfskin burned, but she rolled it tight and kept it in the chest with her mother's combs. Years later, when the river rose again, a boy came to her door asking for the lines.
She gave him a pen and a square of hide and told him the outer band mattered most, the solid black edge where the water was not permitted to go. He drew it heavy and steady, and she let him keep it.
