Polynesian-style band with spiral on a forearm

Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo wraps part of the forearm as a band of bold blackwork. A large spiral curls across the centre, surrounded by chevron, zigzag and interlocking geometric panels, with a smaller spiral at the lower left. The solid black ink and clean edges contrast with the pale skin, and the soft, blurred wooden background keeps the focus on the design.

Dear Tomas, the paddle came out of the shed on Tuesday, the way you said it would, with the spiral cut into the grip. I did the chevrons first, as Nan taught me, because a zigzag that goes wrong can be hidden by the next one but a spiral can't. I sat at the bench until the lamp ran dry, the pencil marks gone grey on the wood.

The oak came off the Marguerite after she went onto the rocks at Carrick Point. We pulled her ribs out before the council got their hands on the hull, and Mr Reddy kept the plank in his barn for eleven years, saying it would be good for something. I gave the spiral the middle of the board, where the swell would turn over before it broke. The band of interlocking panels runs the length of the grip, narrow enough that the grain still shows through between the cuts.

I couldn't finish the smaller spiral at the bottom corner. My hand kept drifting wide, the way yours used to when you were learning to hold the gouge. I left it half cut and told myself that was the wood's doing.

You always said the centre of a spiral is where it starts, not where it ends. So I've left the middle of the big one uncut, a little pit no deeper than a fingernail. Come down on the Saturday tide and put your thumb in it, and tell me where you think it begins. Bring the good chisel, the one with the split handle, the one you wouldn't let me borrow.
