Conch shell on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed tattoo of a spiny conch shell runs along the forearm, with its pointed spires extending towards the wrist and its rounded body near the elbow. The shading is built from fine hatching and soft grey tones that give the shell depth and texture. The shell is set against bare skin, with the man's black t-shirt and a blurred street scene behind him.

Dear Nell, the shell came this morning in a box that smelt of tar and cheap string, and I have not been able to put it down since. Mr Ogle at the post office swore it had been to Nassau and back before it reached Carrow Lane, which I doubt, but the brown paper was soaked through and someone had written 'handle with care' in capitals that ran off the edge.

You will remember Father kept one on the mantel, the big spiny conch he brought home from the Caribbean before the war. Mother dusted it on Thursdays and said it was the only thing in the house that had seen more of the world than she had. When I pressed it to my ear after the funeral I heard only the bus on the high road, but I held it there until my neck ached, pretending otherwise.
The spines are what get me. Each one curls back on itself like a wave that has thought better of breaking, and the grey shading in the body is so fine I could count the lines with a magnifier. I have set it on the windowsill where the light from the chapel crosses at four o'clock. Tomorrow I shall ask Mr Ogle who sent it, though I think I already know.
Come on the Saturday train if you can. Bring your own shell if you still have it, and we will see whether the two of them still agree about the sea.
