Connected dot circles down a thigh
Dotwork · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows three large concentric circles linked by a wavy line that runs down the outer thigh, built from many small dots. The dots vary in size and colour, with black, blue, red and orange ink, and a yellow dot at the centre of the lowest circle. The composition is vertical, with the largest circle at the bottom and the design fading gently into the surrounding skin.

Right, sit down, the lot of you, the soup can wait. Yes, you at the back with the glass in your hand, I can see you. My Walter used to say a marriage is three waterholes and a beck running between them, and nobody tells you which pool you'll be standing in when the rain stops. He said that the summer he was nine, when the beck above Hartsend dried to a thread and he walked it with a tin cup and a stick, counting pools.

There were three. The top one was shallow and bright, and the sun lay on it like coins on a tablecloth, red and orange and white. The middle one was deep and black as stewed tea, and he could never see the bottom, so he stood on the stones a long time making up his mind. The bottom one was round and calm, with a single gold leaf turning slowly in the middle, the way a ring turns on a finger when the hand has gone warm.
He walked that water down to the bottom pool every day of the drought, and every day he dropped a pebble in the same spot so he'd know his way back. Eleven pebbles, he told me, and he never once found the floor of the middle one. He tried with a length of twine and a fishing weight, and the twine went down and down and then just went on going.
So when the rain comes, and it will, don't go looking for the bottom of the deep one. Go down to the round calm pool and wait for the leaf to come round to you. Walter's eleventh pebble is still down there under the gold leaf, and I have never once gone in after it. Raise your glasses to these two.
