Henna mandala on an upper arm

Geometric · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A radial mandala of fine brown scrollwork and dots sits on smooth skin, with petal-like loops radiating from a small central pink gem. Glitter or small pale highlights are scattered across the design and the surrounding skin. The composition is centred and tightly framed, with the design taking up most of the image.

Nell had the cone of paste warm in her palm and the kitchen clock was ticking towards the ferry, so she worked fast, starting from the middle the way her gran had taught her, dot by dot, until the centre sat like a sun in the sand. He sat very still on the oilcloth, watching the window where the grey water came and went beyond the groyne. "My wife had a brooch like that," he said. "Silver sea urchin, from a shop on the front that's a bookmaker's now."

Nell didn't answer. She pulled the scrolls outward, loop after loop, the way the spines of an urchin run out from its crown, and she let the petals curl where the old brooch would have curled. When she reached for the glitter tin left over from the summer fête, he laughed quietly and said Margaret would have thought it vulgar.

At the bottom of the button jar on the dresser was a pink glass bead no bigger than a pea. Nell pressed it into the paste at the heart of the design before it could skin over, then wiped her fingers on her apron. "Leave it a day," she said. "Then it'll stay a fortnight, and you'll not have to think about it."

He held the paper cone's dried flakes up to the window light and turned them slowly, and the glitter caught like spray on a wall. "I'll think about it," he said. "That's rather the point."
