Constellation and nebula on the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A black fine line constellation of linked stars and small sparkle motifs sits over a soft, painted nebula. The nebula is filled with blue, purple, orange and red washes that fade at the edges, while the star lines stay crisp and dark. The tattoo is centred on the side of the ribs against a plain skin background with dark fabric at the top of the frame.

The rain has been coming sideways across the Thursday market since eight, and by eleven your trestle table is a shallow pond of wet cardboard. You have stopped pretending the tarpaulin is doing its job. Your stock is a box of loose star charts, a brass planisphere missing its pointer, and a tin of drawing pins you bought for a pound from a man who never gave his name. Nobody comes out in this weather to buy the sky.

Then a girl of about nine stops at the edge of your stall, water dripping from her hood onto the chart you should have packed away. She doesn't want the planisphere. She wants to know which stars are which, and you, who learned the names from a faded book on a ferry years ago, find you can only remember the shapes. So you tell her to join the dots herself. She takes a biro from your pot and draws straight lines between the pinpricks in the paper, one, then another, until a bent arm of light lies across the page like a sentence someone meant to finish.
Her mother calls from the gate. The girl folds the chart into her coat and leaves you with a smudge of blue ink on your thumb. You wipe it with a damp cloth and it spreads into a bruise of colour, the way ink does when rain gets into it.
That evening you load the lamps into the van and look up. The cloud is solid, with no star in it. But on the back of your hand the blue has faded to a few crisp points, and you join them one to the next, slowly, until you reach the last and find you have drawn the whole thing again, closing a line that a child started in the rain.
