Geometric galaxy heart on the ribs
Geometric · Ribs · Colour · Photo
A faceted anatomical heart with grey linework and vessels sits on the side of the ribs, its lower half filled with a deep blue starry galaxy and a bright star burst. Overlapping red triangle outlines frame the heart, and a soft watercolour trail in orange, purple, teal and blue streams away to the left. The colour is bold and saturated, with clean geometric edges set against the looser wash of the smoke.

Dear Ines, the surveyors came back from the coast today with their red string and long faces, and the council has decided the old observatory on Gull Hill must come down by spring. I am writing from the lamp room with the city spread below me, orange and hazy, the way it only looks after midnight when the foundries have cooled.

Father left me the glass heart, you remember, the one he blew for the chapel window before the fire. He cut it into facets so the light breaks like river ice, then poured a blue into its lower half so deep it holds a whole night sky, and set a single gold star at its centre. Tonight I lifted it to the lamp and the streetlight came through the facets, and the sky inside began to turn.
Outside, smoke from the tram depot slid across the water in ribbons of violet, teal and bruised orange, thinning before it reached the far bank. I tried to sketch it on the back of the tide tables, but my hand kept drawing the red triangles from the surveyors' plans, three sharp points overlapping like they were trying to hold something in.
I have decided to hang the heart from the gallery rail so its star faces the harbour, where the ships come in with their lights doused. If the council wants Gull Hill, they can have the stone, but they will need to catch the light first. Come home before the frost, Ines, and bring the red thread from Mother's basket. We will need it to tie down the sky.
