Watercolour world map and compass on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Colour · Photo

A blue and green watercolour-style world map sits at the centre of a fine black line compass with a thin circle, crossing arrows and dotted line details. The map shading is soft and blended, while the compass lines are crisp and single-needle thin. The tattoo is centred on a pale lower leg against a dark fabric background.

The chart is still tacky at the corners when Mags slides it across the wheelhouse table, and you can smell the tea she has spilt on the Faroes. She has been painting the world in her spare hours since the Ruby Gale took the mizzen, and she has used up three pans of blue on the Pacific alone. You tell her the Atlantic looks like a bruise. She tells you to mind your own ink.

Out past the breakwater the fleet is already strung out in the grey, a dozen hulls with their riding lights blinking like tired eyes. You know every skipper by his wake. The compass rose she has ruled in fine black line sits over the North Sea, and its needle points at Grimsby as if it has never once been wrong. You put your thumb on the dotted track she has drawn from the harbour mouth and it does not move. That is the trick of it. Lines look certain, even when the sea is not.

The skipper's boy comes up with a mug and stops, staring at the map. He asks which country is the green one. You tell him it is the one you will all be sick of by Friday, and he laughs, which is what you wanted.

When the nets come up heavy on the third haul, you go below and find the chart curled on the bunk where she left it. The ink has dried into the continents. Someone has pencilled a small arrow in the margin, pointing home, and beside it, in her neat hand, a single word: turn.
