Constellation tattoo on the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A small constellation of connected dots and four-pointed star marks forms a zigzag line across the side of the ribs. The fine dotted linework is in black ink with no shading, and the design sits on pale skin. Grey draped fabric fills the lower and left parts of the frame.

Nobody else in the Harrow & Lark would climb that high on a wet night. I had the top gondola to myself and the whole car park below, lit orange by the cookhouse, with the lorries lined up along the verge like sleeping animals.

Every town we stopped in, the old rule was the same. You put up one thing that wasn't on the bill. Gran painted a heron on the ticket hut in Stowmarket, and nobody ever asked her why. I had always thought the rule was for the grown-ups, something to keep them looking up. Then I found her notebook in the wagon, full of little dots joined by pencil lines, and a note in her slanting hand that said draw what you steer by, not what you sell.
So I drew the zigzag Tomasz used to point at from the cab of the lorry when we drove through the dark between towns. He said it was a bent old chair, or a bolt of lightning, depending on whether he'd had his tea. He left for Lincoln in March and never sent a postcard. I placed the last star near the hub where the lights would catch it, pressed the brush down hard, and felt the wheel shudder into motion beneath me, slow at first and then faster, until the silver dots blurred into one thin line that nobody below could read but me.
