Constellation tattoo on the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A small constellation made of single black dots and star-shaped marks joined by a dotted line forms a zigzag shape across the skin. The linework is very fine and the dots are evenly spaced, with no shading. The ink is black on pale skin, and the tattoo sits in the centre of the frame against grey fabric.

Marion had been told twice by the florist that the marquee would turn cold after dark, and twice she had said that suited her fine. Her brother Tom was fixing lantern strings to a hawthorn at the edge of the field, swearing softly each time a bulb failed. Above the Northumberland fells the sky was clearing in patches, and the first stars showed through like pins pushed through paper.

Grandad Harold had taught her the sky on the back step of their caravan, one winter when the car would not start. He pointed with a bent finger and made her say the names until they stuck. The zigzag up there, he said, was a fisherman's line dropped into the dark, and the bright one at its far end was the bait. She had never found a better way to remember anything. Tonight she searched for it and found it low over the dry-stone wall, exactly where he would have put it.
The bride came out in a borrowed coat, wanting air before the speeches. She asked what Marion was looking at. Marion traced the dotted line with one finger in the cold, joining the stars for her, and the bride laughed and said her own mother had never once looked up at anything except the washing.
Marion went back inside when the band struck up. Before she did, she picked out the bright star at the end of the line and told it, quietly, that the bait had been taken, and that she had done her share of the hauling.
