A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Old Mother Sallow kept a bed of rosemary behind the church wall, and she always said the sky was a garden too. Someone had planted it long ago and then gone off to the sea, leaving the seeds to come up as they liked. That was why the stars grew crooked, she said, and why the Hook hung low over the orchard every autumn, bent like a shepherd's crook that nobody had come back for.

Her grandson Ned thought this was nonsense until the spring the rosemary died. Frost had got into the roots, so she sent him to the shed for the long watering can, the one with the hooked spout that had belonged to the gardener. Under it he found a tin of seed labelled in faded ink, STARS, FOR THE NORTH BED, and a note saying the seeds would only take if they were watered from the top of the wall at midnight.

So Ned climbed the wall with the can, though it was heavier than he expected, and poured the water up into the dark. Nothing happened except that his sleeve got wet and the owl in the lychgate complained. He nearly gave up. Then a line of small points lit above him, one after another, bent exactly where the spout had bent, each one cold and clean as a drop on a leaf.

Next morning the rosemary was green again, and there was frost on the path in the shape of a hook, with a single bright dot at the top where the can had stood. Mother Sallow said nothing about it. She only put the kettle on and told Ned the gardener would be pleased, though she did not say which gardener she meant.
