Constellation tattoo on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A fine line constellation made of small open circles and four-pointed stars, joined by solid and dotted lines, sits diagonally across the side of the ribcage. The linework is thin and even, with the stars filled in and the circles left open. The tattoo is shown in black ink on smooth skin, with the design filling the centre of the frame against a soft, neutral background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Anselm has left the lamp burning in the bell tower again, and you find him at the slate sill with his sleeve pushed back and a pencil tucked behind one ear. He does not look up. He is counting the stars above the north wall, pricking each one onto a square of vellum with the point of a needle, then joining them where the sky allows.

"The rings are the stars the abbot says are fixed," he tells you. "The four-pointed ones wander. Never trust a wanderer to stay where you drew it."

You have walked the cloister since Compline and your feet are numb through your sandals. Below the walls the valley is black, except for one farmhouse window that flickers like a moth against glass. Anselm draws a solid line from one ring to the next, then stops, holds the pencil above the page, and leaves a gap. The dotted line he makes there is so faint you have to lean close to see it. He has run out of certainty for one link in the chain.

At matins the sky clears to a hard, cold blue. You bring him bread and watch him climb back up to the sill. He finds the gap, checks it against the real sky for a long time, then presses the pencil down and draws it solid, pressing harder than he needs to, as if a line made firmly enough can keep a star where he put it.
