Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A small constellation made of dark dots joined by fine lines sits on the upper shoulder against a plain, dark background. The dots vary slightly in size and the lines are thin and delicate, with the design shaped like a branching star pattern. The image is in black and grey, with soft lighting on the skin and the tattoo as the clear focus.

The goats would not settle on the third night, so Hedda took the lamp up the ridge and found that the stars over the kingdom of Carrowmere had come loose from their places. Five of them hung low over the mill race, trembling like drops on a spider's web, and between them ran a faint silver thread that no one had seen before.

She knew the old tale. The first queen had pinned the stars to the dark with a needle of frost so that travellers could find the road home. But the stitching had rotted, and her heirs had been too proud to mend it, so the wanderers were drifting toward the sea.
The king's clerk came up at dawn with a ledger and a purse. He would pay a silver crown for every star brought down, he said, and the king would hang them in the great hall where they could be counted. Hedda shook her head. She had walked the ridge all night with a bundle of linen thread and a bone awl, and she had pricked the pattern in ink on the back of her hand so she would not lose it: a branching line, a knot, a long limb falling away toward the water.
That evening she climbed to the mill and pushed the awl through the sky, threading each star back onto its line the way a mother stitches a torn sleeve. When she finished, the constellation sat steady and bright, and the goats lay down in the grass as if nothing had happened.
In the morning the clerk found the millpond full of small dark dots, each one a star reflected in the still water, and he never wrote down what he saw there.
