Dotted constellation on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a fine line tattoo of a constellation, made of small black dots joined by dotted lines, with four-pointed star accents at several points. The linework is delicate and even, and the image is shown in black and grey against pale skin. The arm fills most of the frame, with a denim pocket and dark fabric visible at the edges.

The lamp on the Hollin Point ferry went out again somewhere past the breakwater, and Dad said nothing. He just tapped the glass with his thumbnail the way he did when a needle lied. I was nine. He pulled a biro from his shirt pocket and began joining dots on the back of a customs declaration form, pressing so hard the paper tore at one corner.

"Stars don't move for ferries," he said. "Find the ram." He drew the bent line of it, three points like a question mark lying on its side, and then the bright one at the elbow, which he called Hamal. He said it meant lamb, and that it was the only sensible thing anyone had ever named in the sky. I learnt them dot by dot while the deck thrummed under our feet and a border officer walked the car deck with a torch, rapping on windscreens and asking people where they were going at that hour.
I kept that form for years. It went soft in my coat pocket, then in a drawer, until the pencil ghost of the ram was the only part I could still read. When I finally had the pattern copied out in fine ink, I took it to a man who wouldn't let me hold the paper in case I smudged it, and I sat very still while he worked. Each dot was a small, cold kiss of pain, and I counted them the way Dad had taught me.
Last month the lamp on another boat failed, and nobody else on the rail seemed bothered. I looked up, found the bent line, then the bright star at the elbow. Behind us a torch clicked off, and I told the dark exactly where the lamb was.
