Constellation tattoo on upper chest

Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a small constellation tattoo on the upper chest, close to the collarbone, with a denim shirt collar framing the area. The design is made of single thin black lines joining seven small dots in a dipper-like shape. The ink is solid black on pale skin, and the composition is centred on the tattoo with soft, warm natural light.

The fog had sat on Brennock for three days when Tam's father failed to come back over the Gap, and his mother stood at the byre door with the lamp unlit, because she would not spend oil on a night she could not see.

Old Ishbel came up the path with her stick and her shawl and said the seven oxen were out in the sky, yoked to the plough the way they always were. The three at the back made the handle, and the four at the front made the blade. "The sea follows the plough," she said. "Find the blade and you will find the north." Tam said the fog would hide them. Ishbel laughed at him and said the fog never hid the two pointers at the front of the bowl. They were the first to wake and the last to sleep.

So Tam climbed the headland in the dark with his hands on the wet rock. Near the top the fog thinned like wool pulled apart, and there they were, tipped over the sea as if someone had set the plough down to rest. He counted the three stars at the back and the four in the bowl, and in his head he drew the lines between them, the way his father drew the boat's course in the sand before a crossing. From the pointers he followed the line up to the small steady star that never moved.

At first light a grey hull nosed out of the murk below the rocks. His father stepped onto the slip with salt in his beard, and his mother's lamp came on in the window behind them, one warm point in the grey. Ishbel said nothing about it. She only tapped her stick on the stones and went back down the path.
