Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows the word cont;nue tattooed in black serif lettering across the inner wrist, with the semicolon placed between the t and the n. The letterforms are crisp and evenly spaced, with solid black ink and no shading or colour. The plain pale background and close framing keep the focus on the text.

Mind the step, the stair's older than the sea wall, and it has opinions. You want the tale of the typesetter who would not let a full stop finish a sentence. Pull the stools in close, the fire's low tonight, and we're burning the last of the ferry benches.

Three hundred winters back, when boats still ran to Scarrow Isle, there was a printer's apprentice called Oda Penhallow who set type for the harbour board. Her master kept a stamp for every notice: DEPARTED, CLOSED, LOST AT SEA. Oda hated the full stop. It ended everything it touched. So one dull Tuesday she slipped a small brass semicolon into the chase for the new harbour charter, and when her master asked why, she said a semicolon was a door left ajar for the next clause.

The master laughed and let it stand, because nobody reads the small print. The charter was pressed onto the wall of the ferry office, and when the storms came that autumn and the boats stopped, the men who waited beneath it read the line aloud to keep their nerve. The word on that wall read cont;nue, with the mark sitting right in the middle, where a breath could catch and then go on.

The ferry office burned in the second great fog, but the wall survived, blackened and patient. My grandmother walked me past it every morning and tapped the mark with one finger. Whatever you're carrying, she'd say, it isn't the end of the sentence. Now drink your broth and let the fire do its work.
