The band stopped mid-bar at the Winter Gardens and the whole floor froze with it, couples half-turned as if someone had shouted a photograph into being. Old Mr Quaile got up from the piano stool with a stub of chalk in his fingers. He drew a small mark on the lid of the upright, a dot sitting above a curl, the way the printer's boy had shown him on a proof sheet that morning. "That isn't a full stop," he said to nobody in particular. "It's a breath. You hold it, then you go on." He rolled his shoulders, struck the same chord again, and the saxophonist came back through the side door, grey around the mouth, fastening his cuffs.

The band picked up the waltz where it had left off, as though the interval had been a bar's rest and nothing more. Dolly laughed and pulled you onto the floor, and you went round with the rest of them, counting under your breath, keeping time with a pulse you were only just sure of.

When the hall was swept and the lights went down, the chalk mark was still there on the lid, smudged at one edge. Dolly copied it onto the back of a ballroom ticket and folded it into your coat pocket. "Keep that," she said. "You'll want reminding, same as the rest of us."
