Continuous line curled figure with small hearts
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A continuous black line forms a looping shape that rises from the top and curls into a rounded figure at the lower right, with a smaller inner loop. Two small outline hearts sit within the line, one near the middle and one inside the curled figure. The drawing is set on a plain white background with the design centred and no shading.

Agnes had never once lifted her hand from the dough, not in thirty winters. Her father had taught her that a loaf made in one pull would keep its shape in the oven, and that a loaf with a break in it would split along the break like a bad plank. So before the bell at Dunmere church struck five, she drew the dough out in a single rope across the board, flour on her knuckles, and coiled it from the tip inward until the last turn sat snug against the first.

The carter who came for the morning flour asked her once why she bothered with such a shape when a round cob would do. Agnes said the round cob was for people who did not mind what they came back to. She pressed two small hearts into the crust with the end of a wooden spoon, one at the bend where the rope rose, one tucked inside the curl where nobody would see it unless they put their face close to the loaf.
The winter the mill flooded and the lane stayed under for nine days, the village came to her door with empty baskets and no coin. She gave them the coiled loaves anyway, and told each one the same thing: take it home unbroken, and bring the crumbs back when the water goes down.
When the water went, the first crumbs came back in a tin, then in a handkerchief, then in a boy's cap. Agnes kept every one, and in spring she mixed them into the dough, and the new loaf rose along its old line as though it had never been cut.
