The fiddle case had to go under the bench, the old woman said, because the guards at Ostrava had a habit of asking what a thing was worth when they saw it shine. So Tomas pushed it under with his boot and kept his hands folded on his knees like a man at prayer. The bus lurched over the frontier ruts and the rain came sideways off the fields. Nobody on that bus was singing, and that was the strange part, because it had been a wedding bus that morning.

The guard was young and bored and had a torch he kept switching on and off as if it owed him money. He took the passports, read them slowly, then stopped at the old woman's. She had a long thin face and a way of sitting very still, like a note held on the breath. The guard tapped the page. What is the purpose of your visit, he asked, and she said she had come to fetch a tune that belonged to her, and he laughed and waved them on.

Tomas never learned whether the tune was real or whether she had invented it to make the boy laugh. But when the bus finally pulled into Kraków at dawn he opened the case and found, folded inside the lining, a sheet of paper with a single black line drawn across it. It swept up like a question, curled round a small knot at its heart, and dropped to a tail that ended in a hook sharp enough to catch the light. Underneath, in her cramped hand, she had written: sing it low and the border forgets you.
