Harold Venn had walked the headland above Ocean Beach for thirty-one years with a theodolite on his shoulder, and in all that time he never let a boundary pin go unchecked. The brass plug set into the cliff path at 32 42 35 north was the last on his list, and it was the only one he never measured twice. He simply stood over it each March, boots planted on the chalky turf, and let the wind come off the Pacific while he wrote the figures in his notebook in square capitals.

Clara came up the path that spring with a paper cup of tea and a scarf the colour of marigolds knotted under her chin. She had been reading his notebooks since the funeral, and she had found the numbers on the last page, beneath a careless sketch of a gull with its wings folded. "You told the office you were checking pins," she said, and handed him the tea. "You never said this one was a pin." He took the cup and looked at the brass for a long moment. "The cliff moves a little every winter," he said. "Somebody ought to know exactly where it was."
They sat on the damp bench bolted to the rail, and she watched a single surfer wade out past the rocks and turn back, small as a punctuation mark on the grey water. Her father's pencil had faded in places, the figures softened to smudges where his thumb had rubbed them. Clara took a biro from her coat pocket, uncapped it, and went over every digit slowly, pressing hard enough to dent the paper, so that the coordinates would outlast both of them.
