Corked bottle with silhouette
Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo
A small tattoo of a bottle with a yellow-orange cork, containing a rolled paper shape and a solid black silhouette. The bold black outlines and flat fills give it a simple, classic look. Red accents along the inside of the bottle and the yellow cork sit against grey-toned shading on the pale skin.

The shape on the paper is not a map, whatever Mr Okafor says at the chandlery. It is the thing that came up beside the sea wall in March, neck raised over the water like a crane's, and it looked at me the way a neighbour looks over a garden fence. Nobody else on Gull Street would go out on the boards after that. I went out every morning with a tin of stale bread, and every morning it took a little less than the day before.
The town has mostly gone under now. We moved the school up onto the hill, and the bell still hangs in the old chapel tower, which is the only thing left here that rings true. If you have a boat, come up the lane past the lime kiln and ask for Tamsin. She will tell you where the creature feeds on the slack tide.
I have rolled this one tight and I am letting it go. If nobody answers, I hope the sea at least reads it, and tells the animal that I kept the bread for it right to the last tide.
