Lighthouse lantern on a thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A bold lantern encloses a scene of a red and white lighthouse on a green and blue sea, with birds in an orange sky. Thick black outlines define the lantern's frame, with yellow and red banding and small black star accents around the base. The bright, solid colour fills sit within a dark, centred composition on the outer thigh.

By three in the morning the ward goes quiet in a way that feels deliberate, as if the building is holding its breath for the day staff. I do my rounds with a torch in my teeth because my hands are full of paper cups and a clipboard that keeps sliding off my knee. Bed six has been awake since midnight, watching stripes of light from the car park slide across the ceiling.

Bed six belongs to Alwyn, a retired fisherman who has been talking about the light on Carrick Holm since I came on shift. He describes the lamp room the way other men describe their first car: the brass, the smell of paraffin, the keeper who taught him to trim a wick with scissors older than the harbour wall. I ask whether he misses it. He says the sea never asked him to stop looking.
When I bring his tablets he has a small glass lantern on the locker, a souvenir from the rock with a painted lighthouse sealed inside. Someone has put a battery tealight in its base. He asks me to switch it on, and when the red stripe glows against the curtain I notice the whole bay has gone the colour of dusk for the first time all night.
At seven, handover. I write in the notes: bed six settled, light left on. The day sister asks why there's a lamp glowing on the locker, and I tell her it's for navigation. She doesn't laugh, which is how I know she understood.
