Campfire and tent in a sunset landscape
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A circular vignette shows a campsite with a campfire ringed by stones, a pitched tent and a tree stump in the foreground. Behind them sit dark pine-covered mountains beneath a sunset that fades from red-orange to yellow, with birds in the sky and bare trees framing both sides. Black and grey shading gives the ground, trees and tent depth, while the sky carries the strongest colour.

Shift yourselves back from the edge, the pair of you, and mind the ring of stones, they were set there by better hands than ours. Sit on the stump, Ewan, it's worn smooth by every backside that has ever sat on it and it has never once complained. Now. The summer I'm telling you about, Ruairidh and his sister Morag came over on the Tuesday boat with one tent between them and a dog that would not stop barking at the gulls.

Their father, Iain, had seen a stag going up the corrie behind Beinn Dubh and could not leave a stag alone. He said he'd be back before the sun went down behind the ridge. They pitched the tent on the flat above the shore while the sky over the water turned the colour of a hot coal, red at the bottom and yellow at the top, and the birds went over in a loose black line like someone had dropped a handful of pen strokes. Morag built the fire with birch bark and dry pine from under the trees, and they waited, and the mountains went from brown to grey to a shape with no colour at all.
By full dark the fire was low and Iain was not back. Ruairidh wanted to go up with the torch, and Morag said no, a torch on that hill is a lamp for the thing that is lost to find you. So they sat with the dog between them and fed the fire a little at a time, and every time the flames dropped, one of them would say nothing and reach for another stick. Near morning a shout came down off the ridge, thin as a wire. Ruairidh stood up so fast he kicked the stones. Then he threw the last of the birch onto the fire, and the smoke rose straight up past the dark pines where his father could see it from the top of the hill.
