Corked glass bottle with sparkles on forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a tapered glass bottle with a dark cork stopper, a banded neck and a round-bead base, set against bare skin. Bold black outlines define the shape, with grey shading along the glass edges and fading toward the bottom of the bottle. The ochre fill is muted, and three small four-pointed sparkles sit across the bottle body, centred in a close, upright composition.

The bottle was never supposed to leave the harbour office. Nobody at the customs shed in Dover had reason to look twice at a tapered glass thing with a cork in it, though, and Mrs Okafor had packed it in a tin of Bourbon biscuits as if it were the most ordinary cargo in the world. I was twenty-two and carrying it for a man whose name I had agreed never to say aloud.

The officer at the desk held the tin up to the light and rattled it. Inside, the bottle lay wrapped in a stocking, and the ochre liquid moved slowly, catching the strip lamp in tiny flashes, the way sand does when you hold it against the sun. He asked what it was. I told him it was for my nan, who had lost her sense of smell and swore by an old remedy from Lagos that tasted of burnt caramel. He laughed and waved me through. That was the worst part, I think, how easy it was.
On the train I unwrapped it and turned it over. Three little stars lay suspended in the glass, and I realised they were not stars at all but grains of something that caught the light and kept it. I thought of the sparkles as a kind of receipt. Whatever was in there had been paid for, one way or another, and I was only the courier.
At Victoria I walked to the address on the card and rang the bell. A woman with flour on her hands opened the door and looked at the tin, then at me, then back at the tin. She took it without a word, and I felt the weight leave my arms like a bird lifting off a wire. She pressed a warm coin into my palm and said, "Your nan will be pleased." I still don't know whether she was joking.
