Light bulb with heartbeat filament on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded light bulb fills most of the frame, with soft grey gradients on the glass and a detailed metal screw base. Inside the bulb, fine black linework forms the filament, and a heartbeat trace with a small heart sits above the filament. The tattoo is in black and grey on a forearm, centred against plain skin.

Every night at the Holm Road infirmary, when the corridor lamps were dimmed to half, the porter Ada Pell walked the children's ward with a torch in one hand and a spare bulb in the other. The old hands said the bulb above bed nine had been fitted the year the building opened and had never once gone out. People took this for a boast. Ada took it for a warning.

One February the monitor beside bed nine began to sing a slow, uneven tune, and the boy beneath it, Tomas Reyes, eleven years old and far too quiet for his age, reached for her sleeve. Where does the light go when it dies, he asked. Ada sat on the edge of the chair and told him what her grandmother had told her: every lamp keeps a thread of the heart that lit it, and if you sit still long enough you can follow that thread back to where it started. He laughed at that, then slept with his hand open on the blanket.
She watched the trace until the line on the screen wavered like glass in heat. The little heart drawn on the monitor rose and fell, and she saw, for the first time in nineteen years, that the glowing filament overhead bent in exactly the same places. Ada climbed the step stool and laid her palm flat against the warm glass. She counted with the boy's breathing, and she kept counting until the thread inside the bulb grew brighter and the tune on the screen settled into a plain, patient beat.
At six the day shift came in with their tea and their sharp voices, and Ada went home without a word. Tomas was sitting up, complaining about the porridge. Nobody on the ward ever asked her about bed nine again, but the bulb still burns above it, and when she passes the door at night she still lays her hand against the wall, just to feel the warmth come through.
