Tipped nail polish bottle on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a nail polish bottle lying on its side with its brush inserted, and a pool of pink polish spilling beside it. Bold black outlines define the bottle, cap and brush, with flat pink fill and grey shading on the glass. Colour is limited to pink and grey against pale skin, with the design sitting across the forearm.

Now you'll want to sit down for this, because the pink was never meant to be on the floor. Old Mrs Tregarthen kept the chandlery at the top of Fore Street, and she sold everything a boat could need, rope and tallow and lamp oil, and on the back shelf, behind the tins of anti-foul, sat a single bottle of rose-coloured varnish her daughter had ordered from Plymouth and never once opened. Nobody in Porthkerris wore pink in those days. The fishermen's wives thought it frivolous, the way the gulls thought the bins were theirs.

Then came the February gale that took the slate off the chapel roof and rattled every window on the quay. The bottle fell. It went off the shelf, bounced once on the coiled hemp, and rolled, cap spinning, until it fetched up against the brass scales. Its brush slid out of the neck like a dropped paintbrush, and the polish ran out in a slow tongue across the floorboards, as thick and bright as a sunset somebody had spilt. Mrs Tregarthen came down the stairs in her nightdress, took one look, and laughed until she had to sit on a sack of salt.

She did not clean it up. That spring she painted the cracks in the quay steps instead, and the children counted the pink smears all the way to the lifeboat house. Some say the chandlery still has a stain under the counter, shaped like a drowned rose. You will not get me to say whether the gulls have started wearing it, but I have seen one or two on the harbour wall with very particular claws.
