Corset lace and bow on the ribs

Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A tattoo of a corset-style lace-up with a large bow at the lower end, shown on the side of the torso. The ribbon laces and bow are rendered in soft grey shading with highlights and deep shadows that give them volume and a fabric texture. The design is in black and grey only, and it fills the frame against plain skin.

Maud had laced eleven corsets for the Hartley girls before Iris came down the stairs of the Mill Street house with her nerves already showing. "Don't look at me like that," Iris said. "I've had the tea. I'm not going to faint."

Maud took the cord between her teeth and worked it through the eyelets from the bottom up, the way her mother had taught her in the back room above the chemist's. Criss and cross, every rung tight enough to hold but loose enough to let a person eat a slice of cake. The grey silk was cold from the drawer. Iris kept her eyes on the window, where the rain had turned the yard to pewter.

At the base she stopped, as she always did, and tied the bow. Two loops, a knot, and two tails left long so the bride could feel them lift when she turned. Iris asked why she bothered, since nobody would see it under the dress. Maud said her mother had always told her a bow was for the one wearing it, not the people looking on.

When the veil went on, Iris reached back without thinking and felt for the knot at her waist, checking it was still there. It was. Maud packed her needles into the tin and slipped out quietly, though the house was loud with aunts. Somewhere below, a car door slammed and a man began singing the wrong hymn.
