Galaxy and forest full sleeve

Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A full sleeve tattoo shows a space scene with a swirling galaxy and a glowing core near the top of the upper arm, a ringed planet and smaller planets, and a streak of light across a nebula. Towards the wrist, the scene shifts to black and grey shading of bare, leafless trees against a dark sky. The soft blending and layered colour give the piece a realistic, painterly finish.

Mind the fire, Ada, it's eating the good logs again. Right, where was I. The Hollin wood, the one you all walk past on the Keld road with your collars up. Grey trunks standing in the snow like men who've forgotten their coats. Nobody goes past the stone wall after dark. That was my grandmother's rule, and hers before that.

Tobias Wray went in anyway. He was the brewer's boy, nineteen, with a cough he couldn't shake and a debt he couldn't pay. He carried a lantern and a heel of bread, meaning to find the charcoal burners' hut. By midnight the branches had closed over him so thick the lantern showed nothing but black twigs. Then a gap opened above, and there was the sky. Not the sky over Keld. A sky of slow rivers, a pale wheel turning like a millstone, and a ringed world hanging so low he could have touched its rings, bright as a bridle.

He sat down under the nearest tree and wept, because he had seen something he could never pay back. A fox came and sat across from him, its breath smoking. It looked up at the wheel of light, then at him, and trotted off along a path that had not been there a moment before. Tobias followed it, and the trees grew paler the further he went, until the bark was ash and the twigs were frost on glass.

They found him at the stone wall at dawn, lantern out, his cough gone, and he never once said what he had seen. He only asked the brewer for a new sign board, and he painted a wheel on it with a ring round the middle. Ask at the bar for the Ringed Wheel, and mind the step on your way out.
