Planet and sunset seascape on the ribs

Realism · Ribs · Colour · Photo

The tattoo covers the side of the torso and shows a large, glowing blue planet with cloud detail, set against a swirling cosmic sky with stars and a rainbow-like streak. Below it, a sunset over the sea fades into rocky shoreline at the hip, with soft gradients and detailed water and rock texture. The vivid blends of blue, orange, red and teal fill the full composition, which follows the curve of the body.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The telescope came up from Falmouth in a crate with someone else's name stencilled on the side, and my father would not let anyone touch it until the tide was right. Mrs Penhallow at the post office said the sea only ever showed you what the sky had left lying about, and that a child of nine should be in bed. I was nine. I had been standing at the harbour wall since teatime with my hands in my jumper sleeves, watching the sun go down the colour of a split plum over the water.

We set up on the flat rocks below the wall when the light had gone orange and then red, and the sea took the colour and wouldn't give it back. The water rippled like silk being shaken out. My father bent to the eyepiece for a long time without saying anything, which was how he said most things. Then he moved aside and let me look.

There it was, low over the bay where there should only have been dusk: a planet, blue as a marble held up to a lamp, with white cloud wound round it like wool off a spindle. Behind it the sky was all dark swirl and small bright sparks, and a streak of colour came off its edge like a rainbow that had been dropped and was still falling.

"Your grandfather saw one like that off the Cape," my father said. "Said nobody on the boat would believe him."

I didn't believe him either, not then. When I looked up from the lens the sea had gone black and the rocks were under the water, and the planet was only a thing in a tube. I kept my three shillings in my pocket, and I have never once been able to say which of those two skies I was looking at.
