Hand holding paintbrushes and pencils on thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A hand grips a bundle of paintbrushes and pencils, with their black bristles and yellow ferrules at the top, while pink flowers and green leaves spread around it. Below, a small grey creature with red trim and hearts sits beside another pink bloom. Bold outlines, smooth shading and saturated pink, red, blue and green ink give it a vivid colour finish.

She set a pink bloom from the windowsill on the floor between them. The creature sniffed it, then took it in both paws and dragged it under the rack. When she reached for the blue pencil that had rolled there, it chirped at her, a sound like a kettle thinking about boiling, and she let the pencil go.
By morning the sign for the bakery was finished in gold leaf. In one corner, half hidden under the scroll, was a small grey shape with a heart on its belly, and the baker's wife said she wouldn't have it painted out for all the flour in Leeds.
