Cowboy boot with Daddy's Girl banner and roses

Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo

A brown cowboy boot with a silver spur sits at the centre, wrapped by a pale banner reading DADDY'S GIRL. Teal and blue roses flank the boot, with red and dark leaves filling the gaps above. The shading uses bold dark outlines with soft gradients, and the palette is mainly brown, teal and red on the upper back.

You find the boots where the road gives up on the pass, one standing upright on a flat slab of shale as though its owner has only stepped out to look at the view. The silver spur catches the late sun. You know the double stitching on the heel the way you know your own handwriting, so there is no mistaking them, even at forty yards through the wind coming off the scree.

He drove the herd over this saddle every October to the lower meadows, leaving you at the farmhouse with a ledger of feed weights and instructions about the stove. You were nine the autumn he didn't come back down. The man from the county said the weather had come in fast, which is what people say when they mean nothing could be done. Nobody brought the boots home, and you stopped asking after a while, the way you stop listening to a clock.

Now you kneel on the cold stone and tip the left boot. A square of paper slides out, folded small and gone soft at the creases. It says only: for when you're ready to ride the high trail yourself, and the spur is loose, tighten it before you mount. You laugh, and the sound goes straight off the rock face and doesn't come back. You pull the boots on over your own socks. They fit as if they were measured for you.

You start down the switchbacks with your hands in your pockets and the paper folded against your palm. Every step rings the spur against the stones, bright and steady as a bell, and by the time the farmhouse lamp shows yellow in the valley you have stopped counting the steps.
