The camera is still in the bottom drawer of the dresser, wrapped in your grandad's green jumper, and I have not yet had the nerve to take the film out. You said to leave it alone until you got back from the city, so I have. The lens cap is on the bench where he left it, and the strap has gone stiff with the damp that comes up off Hollin Wood after rain.

He used to walk in there at first light with that thing round his neck, and every morning he'd come back with nothing but the same three photographs of the brook, each one a little greyer than the last. "The light's never the same twice," he'd say, and I'd tell him the light was fine, it was his thumb over the lens. He laughed at that. He always laughed at that.

Last week the vicar's girl brought up a roll she'd found in the hedge by the stile, the blue flowers beside it all gone to seed. Forty-odd frames, every one of them the same patch of ferns and a fox with its tail up, shot from low down. Only the last frame was different. It was your grandad, sitting on the fallen oak with his cap off, looking straight down the lens at whoever held the camera. I think it was me. I'd like to think it was me.

So I'm sending the film to Mr Pruitt in Ledbury to be developed, and I'll write when the prints come back. Stay focused, love, and mind the ice on the stile.
