Anchor with roses and rope on a calf
Neo-trad · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A grey-shaded anchor runs vertically across the leg, with a coiled rope wrapped around its shank. Red roses, teal blossoms, green leaves and thin tendrils climb the anchor and spill over its flukes. Soft shading gives the anchor and roses volume against the skin, and the red and green detail sits against the grey metal.

Brother Aldous has sent you up the bell tower twice this week because the rope has frayed where it runs through the wheel, and twice you have come down with splinters and a feeling that the abbey is older than its repairs. Today you carry a new length of hemp from the cellarer, still stiff with tar, and a marlinspike borrowed from the fishermen at Porthgwarra, who buy their salt from the brothers.

The anchor hangs in the cloister, where the old abbot had it dragged up from the shingle after the Morwenna broke on the reef in his grandfather's time. Nobody remembers why it was given a place of honour instead of being melted for nails. Its black shank has been rubbed bright by generations of hands touching it for luck, and someone long dead has twined a rose stem through the ring at its crown, so the thorns catch the light.
You work the new rope into the old, splicing in the cold with your fingers numb against the stone, counting tucks the way Brother Aldous taught you. When the last strand is pulled tight you look up and see that three red buds have opened overnight on the wall where the roses climb, bright against the grey stone.
You understand then that the anchor was never about the ship. It was something to hold on to, and the abbey has kept hold of it for a hundred years by ringing the hours on a rope that is only as strong as the hands that mend it. You coil the spare hemp over your shoulder and go to ring Lauds, your palms already rough with it.
