Cowboy hat and boots with a script quote
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of a cowboy hat resting beside a pair of cowboy boots, with shading that gives the hat brim and boot leather a three-dimensional look. Below the illustration, a handwritten script quote reads "Life's a dance you learn as you go" in black ink. The photo is taken close up and straight on, with the design filling most of the frame against pale skin.

Well now, you want to hear about Dell Pruitt's boots, sit down on that crate before you fall down. Nobody in Ferris Gap ever saw Dell dance, not once in forty years of Saturday nights at the Silver Spur, and he'd tell you himself he had two left feet and a right one he didn't trust. So when the travelling fiddler came through in the spring of '56 and Dell walked up to the bandstand with his hat in his hands, the whole room turned round like a flock of starlings.

The fiddler, a skinny fella called Ambrose Tull, looked him up and down and said, you've got boots on, son, that's a start. Dell had bought them off a rodeo man in Amarillo for eleven dollars and a promise to never wear them to church. They pinched him something terrible. He danced anyway, stomping and sliding across the sawdust while the bottles rattled and the girls at the back hid their giggles behind their gloves. Halfway through a reel he came down wrong on the heel and sat clean on the floor, hat rolling off across the boards like a runaway wheel.
Everyone waited for him to be mortified. Instead he laughed till he wheezed, and Ambrose, grinning, pulled him up by the collar and said, that's the dance right there, you learn as you go. Dell hung his hat on the nail by the door that night and never once asked for it back. Years later, when they buried him, his boots were still by the bandstand where he'd left them, and the fiddler played one slow tune over them before he drove on.
