Cowboy hat and boot with script quote

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a cowboy hat resting beside a worn boot, with the script line Life's a dance you learn as you go written beneath them. The hat and boot are rendered with soft greyscale shading and fine highlights to give them volume, while the script uses thin, even linework. The tattoo is shown in black and grey on the upper back, framed tightly with the skin around it in view.

That was the summer you tried to learn the two-step from a schoolteacher named Eustace Leng, who had a wooden leg and a patience that came from years of chalk. He counted for you in the empty hall above the feed store while the fans turned slow overhead. Left, right, back, turn. Your boots kept betraying you. By August the heels had gone down on the outside and the leather had gone soft as an old glove, and Eustace said a boot that bent wrong at the ankle was a boot that had already learned something about you.

You never did get the steps clean. But on the night the fiddler lost a string and played the rest on three, you found yourself turning the right way without thinking, and Dolores, banging a tray at the bar, mouthed something you took for shame and later decided was pride. You left the hat on the hook by the door, and the boots beneath it, scuffed and bowed, still tapping out the beat.
