Red bow and script quote on a foot

Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo pairs a red bow with black cursive lettering that reads Because I'm a Lady, that's why, running across the top and outer side of the foot. The bow has black outlines and red shading with a lighter highlight, while the script uses bold, flowing strokes with a mix of thick and thin lines. The skin is pale and evenly lit against a grey carpet, with the bow at the left and the text leading toward the toes.

Dear Ronald,

Your mother tells me you have been writing to the Sunday paper about the red ribbons on the hawthorn at the bottom of Coldharbour Wood, so I thought I had better explain myself in ink rather than let you make a fool of yourself in print. Yes, I tied them. Three bows, one for each boundary stone my father showed me when I was small, and one for the fox that used to sit on the gate and judge the milkman. The bows are my business and nobody else's.

You also say I refused to help with the ditch clearing on Tuesday and that Mr Pargeter called me stubborn. I was not stubborn. When he asked why I would not climb in with a spade, I told him what I tell everyone: because I'm a lady, that's why. I was in my good boots with a basket of eggs and a sensible hat, and a ditch does not require a woman of my years to wade into it like a navvy. Pargeter may dig it himself. He has the arms for it, and I have never once told him so.

Come and see me at Easter and bring your appetite. I will leave the back door open and the kettle on, and you may ask me anything you like, though I cannot promise an answer you will enjoy. Tie your laces properly on the path, and do not let the wood frighten you. It only frightens people who have not been introduced.

Your loving aunt, Winifred
