Cross and script quote on a foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a foot showing a black ink tattoo. An ornate cross sits on the left, followed by the handwritten script line Walk by faith, not by sight running along the outer edge of the foot. The lettering and cross are rendered in solid black with smooth, even linework against light skin, and the background is a dark leather surface.

Dear Tom,

The big top came down for the last time in Oldham on Tuesday, and Mr Vasić has finally stopped pretending the wire is safe. You'll remember the rigging from when we were kids, how it sang in the wind. It's rusted through now, and the ringmaster has sold the elephant's trailer to a scrapyard in Wigan to cover the wages we're owed. Only Ottilie still goes up every night, because she says the wire is the one thing in this town that doesn't lie to her.
Last Thursday the generator failed halfway across her crossing and every lamp went out, so the whole tent went black except for her silhouette against nothing. Forty people in the stands, and not one of them breathed. I stood at the foot of the ladder with the paraffin lantern in my hand and could see her feet moving, though I couldn't see the wire at all. She carries a verse from her grandmother, walk by faith, not by sight, and on the bad nights she mouths it to herself before the climb. She didn't look down. She didn't need to.
She reached the platform. The lamps came back on a minute later and the crowd roared like they'd paid for a miracle. Ottilie climbed down, took the lantern from my hand, and asked me to tell the ringmaster she'd do the Sunday matinee too.
Come up in May if you can. Bring your boots, and I'll keep the last of the cake for you.
Love, Nell
