Creature tearing through skin on back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A scaled creature with a ridged, spine-like back pushes out through a split in the skin, with two hands gripping the edges of the opening. The shading is smooth and high in contrast, with fine hatching along the ridges and soft grey tones on the hands and torn skin. The photograph is taken straight on across the back, with the tattoo filling the centre of the frame.

Every April the keepers on Scarrow Light scraped the tower and limewashed it fresh, and every April the old render cracked along the same seam below the lantern room. Ada Penhallow had the brush that year because her uncle's knees had given out, and she worked the seam with a putty knife while gulls shrieked over the Atlantic. The crack was wider than it had been in March. It looked warm, though the stone was cold as a church bell under her palm.

By noon the split ran a full arm's length, and something behind it had begun to press. It was not the wind. Wind did not have fingers. She saw the first hand push through the grey lime like a swimmer's hand breaking a pond, long and knuckled, gripping the lip of the gap. Then a second hand came, and she dropped the knife and sat down hard on the scaffold boards, her heart going like the foghorn.
The thing that followed was ridged down its spine like a fish cured in brine, scaled from crown to tail, and it turned its head towards her with two eyes the colour of a lamp left burning. It did not roar. It studied her the way her uncle studied the barometer, as if reading weather it did not care for. Then it set its shoulders against the stone and began, very patiently, to climb out.
Ada did the only sensible thing a keeper's niece could do. She climbed the ladder to the lantern room, lit the lamp early, and swung the great lens until its beam fell full on the cracked tower. The creature hissed, sank back into the render, and left its fingerprints pressed into the lime. She has whitewashed the tower every spring since, and she never takes the brush from the ladder without checking the seam. Each April the marks are a little deeper, as though the thing is learning the lamp's timetable.
