Dear Nell, the lamp at Carrick Head has been out three nights now, and the keeper here swears it is the jellies that did it, not the damp. I laughed at him until I went down to the lower steps yesterday at low tide and saw them for myself. A great pale bell rocking under the swell, the sort the fishermen call bonnets, and beneath it those frilled arms folding and unfolding like a lady's lace fan left out in the rain. Forty of them at least, drifting in past the rocks as if they had business with the lighthouse.

I sat on the step with my boots wet and thought of you. You always said the sea was only a great deal of water pretending to have manners. I wanted to tell you the jellies have none of the pretence. They go where the tide tells them and never once look back at the coast. Old Tobin came down with his lantern and said they were the souls of drowned lamplighters, which is nonsense, but he said it with such a straight face I nearly believed him.

I have rigged a net off the landing and tomorrow I will try to haul one up in a bucket so you can see it, though I know it will not keep its shape out of the water. Light the back parlour lamp when you get this. If I can see it from the headland I will know the wind has changed and I may come home.
