Crescent moon and clouds on an upper arm
Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A crescent moon filled with stylised clouds sits within a circular outline, with a field of small dots forming the sky above. The linework is fine and bold black, and the stippled dots and clouds are shaded in black ink with no colour. The tattoo is centred on the arm against plain skin, with a grey knit sleeve visible at the left edge.

Dilys had the service hatch open on the fourteenth floor and a torch clamped in her teeth when the lift shuddered and went quiet again. Below her the shaft breathed cold air up through the cables. Above, through the wire-meshed vent, a square of night sat over Harrow Court, and she could see the moon in it, lying on its back as if someone had taken a bite out of it.

She had been sent up at two in the morning because Mr Okafor on eleven had pressed the alarm four times and then rung the office to say he was not going to climb nine flights with his shopping. Dilys did not mind the night calls. Her son Owen was asleep in the flat with the telly on mute, and the building was quiet in the way it only got after the last bin lorry had gone.
Last week Owen had drawn the moon for her on the back of a council letter about parking. A thin paring on the outside, and inside it a heap of clouds curled like cabbage leaves, and above them a sky peppered with dots, because, he said, the stars were too small to bother with properly. She had pinned it to the fridge with a magnet shaped like Blackpool Tower.
The motor caught with a clunk. The lights blinked on in the lift car, and somewhere below Mr Okafor cheered. Dilys reached up and pressed the vent shut, then sat a moment longer on the cold steel with the torch off. The moon had slid behind a cloud, exactly the way Owen had drawn it, and she thought she might tell him in the morning that he'd got it right.
