Crescent moon and stars on a wrist

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small crescent moon with two star shapes sits on the inner wrist and forearm. The moon is built from soft, smudged black and grey shading with blurred, feathered edges rather than crisp outlines. The tattoo is centred on a pale arm against a dark background with out-of-focus flowers at the right.

The relay on Harrow Shoal had been dark for eleven days when the crescent came up over the ice shelf, and I was the only one awake to see it. Mirela had gone under in the dormitory with her boots still on. The dust storms that filled the valley had turned the sky the colour of weak tea, and the moon, when it finally pushed through, looked as though someone had rubbed it with a thumb and stopped halfway.

I logged it anyway. Protocol says to log anything that crosses the sensor array, and a crescent is a shape the array understands even when it refuses everything else. Two bright points sat inside the curve, one above the other, and the algorithm flagged them as stars, which was impossible, because nothing bright shines through that much dust. I checked the feed twice. Both points stayed put while the blur around them drifted, as if they had been drawn on after the fact and never quite settled.

The old navigators used to say a moon that smudges is a moon that is leaving. I did not believe them. I wrote the coordinates into the log, sent the packet down to Tessaly, and waited for the acknowledgement that would take four hours to cross the gap. When it came back it said only RECEIVED, and I understood that somebody on the other end had seen the same thing and decided not to say so.

By dawn the storm had thinned. The crescent sat low over the rim, soft at its edges, with the two stars burning like sparks left on a dark cloth. I sealed the hatch, switched off the console, and walked out onto the shelf to watch it go.
