Crescent moon and sailboat on an ankle
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A sailboat with a single sail sits below a crescent moon, which has a small star and speckled shading on its inner curve. The linework is loose and sketchy, with dark ink washes and spatter dots extending outward from the moon and the boat. The tattoo is shown on a pale ankle against a dark background, centred in the frame.

The band had already packed the double bass into its case when Ruth saw the mast through the pier windows, a thin black line cutting across the moon's last sliver. She untied her apron and pressed her forehead to the cold glass. Nobody else on the boardwalk had noticed the boat tacking in against the wind.

Her brother Alf had taken the Mary Lowe out at six that morning, promising to be back for the Saturday dance. He had promised plenty of things. Ruth climbed the stairs to the gallery, lifted the dust sheet off the gramophone and set the needle on the last record of the night, a slow foxtrot he used to hum while he mended nets.
The floor emptied in pairs. Mr Pryce from the chandlery stayed behind with his broom, and when she told him the boat was coming in he laughed and said the tide was against it. She took the hurricane lamp from its hook anyway, carried it to the end of the pier and swung it slowly over the water, once for every bar of the tune.
Out past the breakwater the sail turned pale, then the hull came round, low and certain, and a second light answered from the bow. Ruth set the lamp down on the boards. The moon had slipped behind a cloud, but the boat knew the way in without it.
